What People Are Saying…

After moving to Waxhaw in summer of 2018 we started researching SLP services for our daughter. Having struggled for years with SLP services at larger providers we knew we were looking for something/someone more personal to help our daughter improve and grow her self-confidence. We discovered and met with Dr. Somma and knew immediately we found our new SLP. She is warm, welcoming and her passion and commitment to her career is clear. Our Madie has blossomed! She speaks more often, more clearly and in longer, fuller sentences! We knew her voice was there just waiting to come out!

Knowing Madie is not only growing and improving but that she enjoys going to see Dr. Christine each week is priceless! I tell anyone who asks – one of the best parts about moving to Waxhaw is being able to work with Dr. Christine Somma.

Madie Hardy

I am board certified behavior analyst who specializes in Autism and individuals with developmental delays.  I have had the pleasure of working with Christine with several clients over the past few years.  She is passionate about her work and truly cares about each of her clients. She attends team meetings and always gives valuable input.   I love the fact that she also has a background as an educator as this really helps her to encompass the whole child.   I have worked with many speech and language pathologists over the years and Christine is by far one of the best.   It is rare to find a therapist who puts so much time and energy into her clients.   I would highly recommend her.

When my 2 year old son met Dr. Somma he was struggling with a severe phonological disorder. Not only did his lack of speech affect his ability to communicate, but also to connect with others and his confidence. She brought an unmatchable skill set and remarkable knowledge to the table, but also made the time they spent together rewarding and fun. Not only did my son’s language progress, but we saw a remarkable difference in his personality, his relationships with others, and I am in awe at his ability to speak clearly and the vocabulary he has produced as a result of her efforts. She has blessed him with the power of words as he now takes on kindergarten with the speech capabilities he needs to thrive.

Simply put, Dr. Christine Somma is special! She is a gifted speech pathologist with a professional, warm, energetic and genuine manner. Dr. Christine has a unique way of connecting and communicating with our daughter, making the sessions fun and effective. Her treatment plans are clear and explained thoroughly so we can implement the techniques at home. Dr. Christine always makes our daughter feel sage and special!

I would not hesitate to engage Dr. Christine again in the future. I give her my highest possible recommendation!

Janet, Shannon's Mom

A little over a year ago, we were searching for someone that could help our 4 year old son. He was frustrated that he couldn’t communicate beyond his basic needs and had almost completely stopped talking. We had no idea how much our son’s communication and life as a whole would improve when we found Dr. Christine. She took the time to develop a relationship with our son, really getting to know him and tailoring his therapy sessions to meet his individual needs as well as the needs of our entire family. Therapy sessions for our son quickly became a bright spot in our week, not only for all of the progress he was making but also for the warm and welcoming atmosphere Dr. Christine provided. It is such a rarity to find such skilled and compassionate medical professional. Her passion for what she does is truly amazing and it touches the lives of all those that come to know her. We are so grateful!

Dr. Christine is a wonderful speech therapist and has really helped my granddaughter with her speech and articulation in the past year and a half. She is always compassionate with my granddaughter. Dr. Christine is very knowledgeable and educated in her field and works great with children. Dr. Christine has really given my granddaughter a good foundation to be able to start kindergarten. And for that, we will be forever indebted to her.

Mellisa, Hartleigh's Grandmother

There are really no adequate words to thank you for being a part of our lives this past year and a half. Your help has given our son confidence and fostered his social-emotional growth. You’re caring and encouragement played a large role in our decision to enroll our son in preschool! Our family has been so blessed by your extraordinary professional and educational skills, and deeply touched by your relentlessly giving heart!

Carla, Dominic's Mom

My daughter worked with Dr. Somma over the summer just to keep up with speech that she receives at school. She opened my eyes to concerns she had with my daughter and led me in the direction to get her more help. My daughter worked well with Dr. Somma and she made it fun for her by using technology and games. I was impressed how Dr. Somma gave us homework sheets to take home and practice and recommended an app to use on the I-pad that my daughter worked with every day. It was a pleasure to work with Dr. Somma. I could tell she cares about the children she works with and enjoys helping them with their speech and language skills.

Jennifer, Allie's Mom

We are very grateful for the hard work that Christine Somma did with our son Ryan over the past few years with his phonological disorder. Ryan enjoyed the therapy sessions and really developed a nice rapport with Christine. Over the past few years his speech has improved tremendously. His grades, especially in reading, have also improved greatly. In fact, this year he was one of two students chosen to represent his class in the school spelling bee, coming in 6th out of over 50 students from multiple grades who participated! We thank Christine for all of her diligent work and highly recommend her to any parents needing speech or learning services for their child.

Christine Somma and I are both speech language pathologists and have worked together for many years. We have worked together, treating and collaborating on many cases. She has always impressed me with her continual thirst for learning and brilliance, as well as her exceptional clinical skills. She has the unique ability to combine her extensive knowledge in neuropsychology, education and speech and language to treat her patients. Working with such a knowledgeable and caring clinician has taught me to be a better speech and language pathologist. She is truly missed in New York!

My son Isaac has required speech and language therapy since the age of two. Christine has been working with Isaac for the last year and a half since we moved to Waxhaw, and she is hands down, the best speech-language pathologist he has ever had. She is very thorough, takes each of his goals seriously, and always pushes him to his maximum potential. Isaac’s language, reading, writing and speech have improved notably since he started working with Christine.

Tracy, Isaac’s mom

I am currently a first year speech- language pathology graduate student who has had the great fortune to have Christine Somma as my mentor. Throughout my search for the perfect career path, Christine welcomed me with open arms and encouragement. She is a therapist that leads by example, exemplifying the difference a speech-language pathologist can make in the lives of others. I have witnessed firsthand the creativity, hard work, patience, thoughtfulness and most importantly passion, she exhibits with each and every patient. As my journey continues, I can only hope to one day be a speech-language pathologist with the skills and compassion of Christine Somma.

Christine Somma, has provided my patients with comprehensive speech and language therapy services for the past seven years. I have been very pleased with Dr. Somma’s compassionate approach, and the wonderful progress my patients have demonstrated.

Matthew D. Samarel, M.D. , Kids First Pediatrics

Christine Somma has been my son’s speech language pathologist for 3 years. What an incredible difference she has made in his life! My son has had speech therapy since he was a toddler and because of his behaviors we have had MANY therapists over the years. He is now a teenager and is unable to speak but uses an augmentative communication system to express himself. Christine has gone far beyond what any therapist would do for my son; she learned how to use his system and set it up to help with the flow of communication, she met with his speech therapist from school so that both would be working together toward the same goals, and the biggest gift she gave him was not giving up when his behaviors interfered with his learning…there has not been any negative behaviors throughout this past year. She has taken him into the community so that he can use his communication system in real situations and even has gone as far as setting up situations to facilitate communication. At the grocery store where Christine brings my son, I had one of the employees stop me to tell me how much improvement they have seen in my son. Due to the dedication of Christine Somma, my son is able to express himself and I am forever grateful!

Derha, Devin’s mom

Christine has been working with my son since 2006. Over the years she has become a very special part of our family. She has worked (tirelessly) to help my son communicate and express his wants and needs. She has also helped him expand his diet by working with him to overcome his oral sensory issues. Christine is an amazing advocate; attending all of our IEP meetings and standing up for my son and his needs in school. She is knowledgeable of the laws and will not back down until all concerns and needs are addressed. I firmly believe that my son would not be where he is today without the support and love Christine has shown him. For this, I am Christine’s biggest advocate.

Dawn, Carlin’s mom

I have the rare privilege of knowing Christine Somma as a colleague and a parent of a child with special needs. She is an exceptional clinician whose devotion to children and their parents alike is unparalleled. Christine has a wealth of knowledge in the fields of speech-language pathology, neuropsychology, and education. Her unique application and practical use of this knowledge allows her to work with students with a variety of needs. She has an uncanny way of knowing how to reach and teach each of her students, developing a wonderful rapport with each one. Christine’s efforts know no limits; she continually develops individualized instruction and therapy so that each one of her students meets his/her optimal potential. While I have learned volumes from Christine as a clinician, I have learned even more so as a parent. She provided me with invaluable insights about my own child and shared with me the tools and resources that allowed me help my son become a functional communicator and member of his community. She is forever an inspiration and a gift to her field, her students, and our world.

Anne Decora , Speech Language Pathologist MS-CCC/SLP

Christine is the best! Upon our first meeting she was able to tell that my son, Shai was misdiagnosed and contacted the referring physician to discuss her findings.

Throughout the course of therapy she was able to think outside the box. No matter what my son interests were, she adapted therapy to suit his needs… when Shai was “into” Thomas the Train she created “Thomas” materials, the dinosaur period resulted in Dinosaur game boards. No matter what his interest at the time, my son was always engaged and looking forward to each visit. The teachers at Shai’s school were amazed by the progress and how Shai’s speech improved. They wished that every child could have the same opportunity to flourish.

The teachers were always provided with activities and tools to help my son in the classroom. My son’s confidence improved as the year unfolded. It was wonderful to walk into the classroom and find my son during “show and tell” confidently talking to his friends at the front of the classroom….asking questions, commenting and fully engaging in conversation.

We were told that our child would need speech therapy until he was 8 years old. In less than 2 years Shai was speaking clearly. Ending therapy has been bittersweet.

Christine Somma has been my 10 year old son, Michael’s Speech-Language Pathologist for over 3 years. As a result of Christine’s dedication, my son has made great progress while under her care! Michael has a genetic condition which has caused speech and learning delays. She discusses Michael’s progress and any concerns following each session. Although she sees Michael in her private practice, she regularly communicates with his school teachers and is involved with the IEP process by attending meetings and actively participating in discussions. We have moved several times over the past 10 years and Michael has had many Speech-Language Pathologists and Ms. Somma is by far the best and most caring therapist my son had ever had. I thanks God every day that he brought her into our lives! I would highly recommend Christine to anyone seeking a highly qualified Speech-Language Pathologist…she will really care about your child!

Toni

I can’t say enough good things about Christine. My son was born premature and required OT, Play Therapy and Speech Therapy ranging from 3 to 4 days a week from the time he was a young toddler. We had several different Speech Therapists work with him early on and I could tell he was understanding what we were saying, but he wasn’t able to communicate back more than a few words and some sign language. When Christine met him she quickly started Oral Speech Therapy, which seemed to open Pandora’s box! She is one of the most caring and knowledgeable people in her field. He was diagnosed with Mild CP just before his 3rd Birthday and because of the low muscle tone in his mouth the Oral Speech Therapy was essential. I have consulted and hired her to attend IEP meetings and to help me understand and advocate for my son in school. I highly recommend her as an expert in her field. I spent years getting mediocre Speech Therapy services and in just a short time she worked wonders with my son.

Cathy

My husband and I discovered something was not right with our youngest son, Isaac in the spring of 2008. After a year of trying to find out what was wrong he was diagnosed with PDDNOS in 2009. All aspects of his communication were affected. He was not able to tell us the simplest of needs or desires and would throw himself into a ranging fit due to extreme frustration. We took action to help him learn communication skills and improve his daily life.

After discussing the situation with our pediatrician, she highly recommended Christine Somma, who was a therapist in the community. She started therapy 2x per week with Isaac and after 6 months we started to see improvement. In the following 1½ years at the age of 3 ½ Isaac could finally answer basic questions and tell us what he wanted or what he needed. There was finally some relief from the stress which resulted from Isaac’s severe communication frustration. The entire family could enjoy the benefits of Isaac’s improved communication and his relationship with his siblings improved drastically.

Our son is now a different child and we have discovered that it is possible to overcome a frightening diagnosis. Isaac is nearing discharge and we will continue to use all the skills that Christine has shared with us so Isaac will continue to flourish. We are overwhelmed with gratefulness…her endless consistency and dedication to Isaac has created his progress and growth and has transformed our entire family. She has become not only “our” therapist but our friend.

Thank you Christine for all you have given to us through your dedication, love of your profession and love for our son. We are eternally grateful.

Diana and Brian

After going with multiple therapists in past, I can say that Christine Somma is one of the best speech therapists we have met. She is extremely knowledgeable and dedicated as well as takes personal interest in every child. She makes it fun for my son and he is always prepared for each session. She precisely knew my son’s weakness and her approach and guidance has brought immense improvement. All I can say is that she makes me smile and we are lucky to have her on our side. Thank you so much Christine!

Over the years, we have had the opportunity to work with many different speech pathologists. By far, Christine Somma is the favorite! She puts her clients at ease and wins them over quickly, building repoire from the beginning. She brings knowledge and experience to the table and is willing to work hard to see improvement in a child. If one approach is not working, she will go at it from another angle, always keeping it fun. My child looks forward to speech sessions and time with Ms. Christine. As a family, we are grateful for Christine Somma. We know that our child is doing so well because of her insight, creativity and input. She really goes the extra mile to motivate and challenge. The end result is success.

When we began to realize our daughter was struggling with her language skills, we were referred for SLP services.  I am so glad we landed in Dr. Christine Somma’s office!  She was warm and passionate about her specialty, and my daughter was always excited to go to her appointments. Most of all, Christine took the time to educate me in the basics of speech and language development, and helped me gain an understanding of how to help my daughter learn.  She is compassionate and highly knowledgeable, and delivered her professional opinions wrapped in kindness and understanding.  We are so grateful that she was at the beginning of our journey in seeking services and support for our girl!
Katie, Carter’s mom
Dr. Somma was recommended to me by a teacher at my son’s school after they noticed he was struggling with a few sounds.  She began working with him at the beginning of summer, and fairly quickly got him up to speed with the main issue, then began tackling some other problem areas.  She makes the sessions fun for the kids with games, activities and then provides helpful, short homework for us to practice at home.  We love how she creates a solid work environment that is still enjoyable for a 4-year-old.  We are happy to have found her and gotten our son the help he needed to allow him to better communicate!
Julie, Tanner’s mom
I highly recommend Dr. Somma for helping improve any child’s speech/language/articulation. She was very easy to work with and made time to collaborate with me so we can maximize our daughter’s improvement by practicing at home as well. She is understanding and works well with children. We were originally working with another SLP and were not seeing much progress if any, with Dr. Somma our daughter improved rapidly, so much so that family and friends were complimenting her speech. She also made extra time to speak with me outside of speech which I really appreciated as a parent. We are so thankful for Dr. Somma and all of her help and guidance!
Erica, Zoey’s mom
Dr Somma, before you entered our life, Brendan would talk and talk and we would listen, but rarely understand what he was saying. We desperately craved to be able to connect with him but language was a wall between us. It’s been a long road, but your hard work and expert care for Brendan has given us one of the greatest gifts of our life. A small window into the mind of our sweet, bright, beautiful boy. I could never thank you enough.
Joy, Brendan’s mom
